LA Pop Ball Screen Continuity

A third ball screen offense to consider is one called LA Pop.  This offense uses back screens and wing ball screens to create scoring actions.  Again, you will notice the gaps that this offense creates to create strong driving actions.

Corner Continuity Ball Screen Offense

Here is another ball screen offense that emphasizes creating gaps for a corner ball screen.  This approach would be beneficial to a team who has a good spot up shooter on the weak side.  One thing to be ready for, however, are teams that really blitz or hard hedge that corner ball screen.  You are really going to have work with your players on slips and skips.

Butler Ball Screening Offense

Here are some generic diagrams showing some of the ball screen actions used by Brad Stevens at Butler.  You will notice that they have great spacing which is extremely important when running any type of ball screen offense.

Detroit Pistons Training Camp Practice Notes

Make Today Matter…What Matters Most

The average person spends
-100 hours a year commuting to work compared to 80 hours of vacation time.
- 91 hours a week at work for dual – career couples with kids.
- 1.8 hours a day doing household activities.
- 2.6 hours a day watching television.
- 8.6 hours a day sleeping.

Time is a non-renewable resource. Once it’s used up, you can’t get it back.

TAKE ACTION TODAY
1. Stop and think…then make a list of what matters most to you.
2. Create a list of how you currently spend your time each week.
3. Organize your list of weekly activities and identify activities that are required and those that are optional and waste time.
4. Take steps to rearrange your schedule or reduce optional activities so that you can spend time doing what matters most.
5. Don’t waste time.

Here is a very detailed approach to teaching a motion offense from coach Douglas Leichner, who is the new head coach for Great Britain’s Under-20 men’s team.  This offense has some different approaches to using motion principles including starting from a 2-3 high set.

  2. Pop and screen
  3. Screen away
  4. Dribble out

Secondary Break Options

For teams that have transition offense built into their philosophy need to have a seamless way to get from their early break to their base offense.  There are a wide variety of secondary breaks out there and it is vital that you find or create something that easily flows into your base offense.  Personally, I prefer simplistic secondary break packages that emphasize quick scoring looks and quick ball movement.

The following resource gives you some simple secondary break options to consider.  The actions are simple and allow you to put pressure on the defense while the defense is trying to get organized.

Bill Self: Kansas Press Breaker

If you are looking for a new press breaker, you might want to take a look at the Kansas press breaker.  It has all of the elements for breaking different types of presses.
  1. Multiple cutters
  2. Ball reversal option
  3. Sideline option
  4. Middle option
  5. Deep option
  6. Spacing

Indiana Fever: Box Out SLOB

Here is a nice scoring sideline out of bounds action used by the Indiana Fever.  I like how it overloads the ball side and then looks to get a lob back over the top.  Would be a good end of quarter hitter with only a few seconds left.

John Kresse: Multiple Trapping Defense

If you are looking for an aggressive trapping defense, you might want to look into the multiple trapping defense by John Kresse.  Coach Kresse has a number of really good ideas to increase defensive pressure that can lead into easy transition baskets.

Dave Bollwinkel: What Makes Good Guards

Dave Bollwinkel wrote this nice resource on what makes good guards.  There is a number of important concepts in here that I like.  Particularly number 4, being able to run the show.  In my opinion, this can be the most challenging part to teach guards.

Middle School Offensive Playbook

Here is a playbook that I put together for our middle school program.  Our middle school teams run an open post offense that focuses on spacing, simple cutting actions, and dribble penetration.  We do not want players being classified as just a post player or guard.  Instead, we want all of our players to learn to handle the ball on the perimeter, as well as develop simple post play.

Boston Celtics Punch 5

The weather this past few days has caused quite a stire in these parts.  I have never seen so much devestation from an ice storm.  I literally had to use a hammer to get get the 3 inches of ice off of my car in order to get into it.

Anyway, today we take a look at a nice little quick hitter to get your post man a quality look.  Doc Rivers is as good as it gets when designing plays and making X and O adjustments.
