Sets to Attack a 1-3-1 Zone Defense

Continuing on with our study of how to attack the 1-3-1, we are going to look at some set actions that you can use to attack a 1-3-1.  Again, we see that these actions rely on screening the bottom defender of the zone.  This screen alone puts a lot of pressure on the defense.

54 Wide Series

Today's basketball sets are from a series called 54 Wide.  These sets are based on the 5 and 4 man setting wide pin screens for scorers.  What I like about setting wide pin screens, is the slip action that the screeners get. Makes it hard for teams to show / hedge on the screen, because you then give up the slip.  If teams do not show / hedge on the screen, it puts more pressure on the cutter defender because it becomes a simple read for the cutter.

Billy Donovan: Elbow Cross Set

Here is a great half court set that has a number of screening actions to get your star player a high percentage shot.  I like screen the screen actions because it makes it more difficult for defenders to hedge or jam cutters coming off of the screen.

Tod Kowalcyk: Ball Screen Offense

If you are looking for a good ball screen offense, you should check out Tod Kowalcyk's ball screen offense. This offense incorporates good spacing and attacking driving actions off of ball screens.  Even if you don't use ball screens as your primary offense, you can use some of these sets and actions as quick hitting entries into your base offense.

Troy Culley: 4 Low Quick Hitter

It is always good to have a quick hitting play to end the quarter / shot clock with.  Coach Troy Culley shows us a 4 Low Quick Hitter that incorporates shooters in the corners and a high ball screen to give your point guard separation from his defender or force a big on small switch.

Mike Rudd Continuity Offense

There are tons of continuity offenses out there.  One that you might not be familiar with is Mike Rudd's continuity offense. His offense has elements of the flex in it, but differs in overall spacing because he utilities a high post presence.

LA Pop Ball Screen Continuity

A third ball screen offense to consider is one called LA Pop.  This offense uses back screens and wing ball screens to create scoring actions.  Again, you will notice the gaps that this offense creates to create strong driving actions.

Corner Continuity Ball Screen Offense

Here is another ball screen offense that emphasizes creating gaps for a corner ball screen.  This approach would be beneficial to a team who has a good spot up shooter on the weak side.  One thing to be ready for, however, are teams that really blitz or hard hedge that corner ball screen.  You are really going to have work with your players on slips and skips.

Secondary Break Options

For teams that have transition offense built into their philosophy need to have a seamless way to get from their early break to their base offense.  There are a wide variety of secondary breaks out there and it is vital that you find or create something that easily flows into your base offense.  Personally, I prefer simplistic secondary break packages that emphasize quick scoring looks and quick ball movement.

The following resource gives you some simple secondary break options to consider.  The actions are simple and allow you to put pressure on the defense while the defense is trying to get organized.

Better Basketball Read and React Quick Hitters

The Read and React offense is one of fastest growing offensive systems.  A lot of the concepts that are taught in the offensive system are things that a lot of coaches are already doing.  However, I think the layered progression approach to teaching is very important.  To often when teaching a new offense, coaches will introduce multiple reads and actions.  Thus, the foundational elements don't get mastered.  There has to be a base set of reaction skills before new reads and actions are included.

The resource I have included has some quick hitting options out of various set formations (3 out, 4 out and 5 out) as well as a BLOB and SLOB hitter.

Troy Culley: Basic Ball Screen Framework

As I work with young kids at both club level and representational regional level, I try to encourage players to read the defense and play what's in front of you so to speak.

The basic framework - 2 and 3 man pick and roll, secondary break into these principles and a couple of different (simple) ways to get into it in the half court set.

One thing to remember is that anything that is shown as 2 man basics can simply be changed to 3 by just bringing the weak side guard to the ball side corner.
