Defensive Thoughts

Greetings,

I know it has be a LONG while since I have shared some basketball resources.  My spare time has completely vanished with basketball, school and graduate school.  Any free time that I have had has been devoted to my family.

Ok, we are reaching the end of our season with playoffs starting this Thursday.  We all hear that defense wins championships and that defense can win you games on the road.  With that in mind, I am going to share some defensive resources to examine.  Whether you are still playing or you have begun planning for next year, I think these defensive resources will help expand our knowledge of defending.

Howard Garfinkel: Clinic To End All Clinics 5

Coach Jim Ponchak compiled these notes from the Howard Garfinkel Clinic To End All Clinics 5.  The notes  contain coaching tidbits and a number of diagrams.  I particularly liked the section on John Beilein practice drills.  Lots of good information.

Bobby Knight: Fort Walton 2009 Clinic Notes

Today's clinic notes are from a 2009 clinic at Fort Walton featuring Bobby Knight. Whether it is a philosophical point or a practice drill, Coach Knight always has something that coaches can use in their programs.  As I read through these notes, the thing that stood out to me was how simplistic Coach Knight made the game.  Something that I will definitely keep in mind.

Conditioning Without a Weightroom

As coaches, most of us are fortunate enough to have a weightroom for our athletes to use.  However, I have talked with a few coaches who do not have access to a weightroom or have very little equipment in their weightroom.  Therefore, coaches sometimes have to get a little creative with their in-season and off-season weight workouts.  Here is a resource that has a number of different ideas that you can use if you find yourself in a situation where you do not have access to a weightroom facility, but would still like your players to do some conditioning and resistance training.

Purdue Drills

Here is a collection of Purdue drills. I am not sure which Purdue team or who was the head coach at the time when these were used, however.  Either way, there are still a bunch of good drill ideas for us all to incorporate into our own systems.

George Karl: Advantages to Running

  1. For whatever reason, refs call way more fouls in transition than in the half court
  2. Everything is better early, no matter what action it is
  3. Offensive rebounding increases by 10% in transition
  4. Wants players to penetrate in transition
  5. Coach Karl would rather have his team too wild and fast and coach them down, then the other way around.
